This mornings sermonette on the holy gospel of St. Mark 1:21-27 can be read here Matins Mk1,21-27 and listened to over here:

We sang the Hymn God’s Own Child, I Gladly Say It (I am Baptized Into Christ!) by Erdmann Neumeister (1671-1756)

God’s own child, I gladly say it:
I am baptized into Christ!
He, because I could not pay it,
Gave my full redemption price.
Do I need earth’s treasures many?
I have one worth more than any
That brought me salvation free
Lasting to eternity!

Sin, disturb my soul no longer:
I am baptized into Christ!
I have comfort even stronger:
Jesus’ cleansing sacrifice.
Should a guilty conscience seize me
Since my Baptism did release me
In a dear forgiving flood,
Sprinkling me with Jesus’ blood!

Satan, hear this proclamation:
I am baptized into Christ!
Drop your ugly accusation,
I am not so soon enticed.
Now that…

Do you know Jesus as your Lord, or are you just a “fan”?

Pastor Jim Driskell, Lutheran Church's avatarPastor Jim Driskell

Mr. Brodsky submits that enthusiasm is about something that happens outside of you, whereas passion comes from within. Ok. Mr Brodsky talks about going to a Rolling Stones concert and seeing Mick Jagger perform. You have to admire the fact that a man of his age and his wealth, he can still bring it. He doesn’t have to, but Norm suggests that Jagger’s music is his passion and so “he has to do it in order to feel alive…” Likewise Brodsky’s passion is building a business, that it really is about him, that is what moves him. I’ve preached about this before in terms of are you in love with Jesus, are you passionate about Jesus, or are you a fan, are you just enthusiastic? Do you live your life in Jesus because He is what moves you, what motivates you, is your reason for life? Or is He a…

Psalm 8:3-5 (MERE MORTALS)

Rebecca Burtram's avatarTHE RIVER WALK

MERE MORTALS

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers- the moon and the stars you set in place- what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. (Psalm 8:3-5 NLT)

Read:1 Chronicles 9, 1 Chronicles 10, Acts of the Apostles 27:21-44, Psalm 8:1-9, Proverbs 18:23-24

Relate: I recently drove Route 81 through Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. This is an incredibly beautiful drive. There were many moments that I called out to my children, “Look at how beautiful this is!” My enthusiasm was frequently met with half hearted, mildly engaged responses from my daughters and my niece. My son, on the other hand, would reply with something along the lines of, “Yeah, that is cool, but you…
